Harper & Moon
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (May, 1993)
Author: Ramon Royal Ross
Average review score:

This book is great!
Harper and Moon is a very exciting book filled with detail. It is about a boy, named Harper, that loves to spend time with his 56 year old friend Olinger, but one day Olinger disappears. Harper wants to find out what happened to Olinger, so on a cold snowy day Harper started riding his bike to Olinger's cabin 25 miles away, when he was supposed to be in school. When he gets there, he makes a shocking discovery. If you want to find out what happens in the end, you should read this awsome book. I recommend this book to everyone.

Harper American Literature
Published in Paperback by Harpercollins College Div (January, 1999)
Author: Donald McQuade
Average review score:

NNhhh...
It's kinda good, kinda not. Too many books in one book, I don't like that. The paper's too thin, the text is too small. If you're a cheapscate and you want the books and stuff in here, (wide variety, that's good,) then I suggest you buy the seperate individual types unless saving money is your only priority.

Harper Anthology of Fiction

big book
This big book is extremely large in girth and ponderous in heft, dense as a New York phone book and dry as Utah sandstone. A very big book, yes indeedy.

The Harper Collins Book of Prayers
Published in Hardcover by Book Sales (May, 1997)
Authors: Robert Van De Weyer and Robert Van de Weyer
Average review score:

An excellent resource for stimulating personal prayer
Van De Weyer first gathered these prayers for his personal prayer times, and the selections reflect his concern for the devotional life. The compendium includes the prayers of church leaders(Clement of Rome, Clement of Alexandria, several Anglican leaders), mystics (John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila), theologians (Bede, Augustine), authors (John Donne), liturgies (Book of Common Prayer) and people of action (Dag Hammerskjold). The names in this review are a mere sample; there are several hundred sources in the book. His sources are primarily Catholic, but he does not neglect the Protestant and Orthodox traditions. He also includes a few prayers from non-Christian traditions, such as Judaism, Islam, and Aztec and African monotheistic traditions.

The prayers include some of the most famous in Christian literature (Augustine's line about the heart not finding rest until it finds God is in here) and are intensely personal. Van De Weyer did a good job of selecting prayers for all occasions: feeling weak, feeling in need of forgiveness, expressing gratitude, desiring justice, contemplating the meaning of life--they're all there.

Van De Weyer includes a helpful one or two sentence biography of each source. This is important if you want to feel a connectedness to the people who have lived the spiritual quest before you, as I do.

This is not an academic book, and it is not designed for those who believe that spirituality cannot be discovered from within (rather than from outside of) the Christian tradition. It may also run against the grain of the American self-help religion. But if you want to drink from the wells of the Christian spiritual tradition, you will satisfy your thirst over and over again as you meditate upon the passages in this book.

Harper Collins French Dictionary/French-English English-French
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (August, 1990)
Author: Henry H., Jr. Collins
Average review score:

The most useful French-English dictionary EVER!
As a French high school teacher, I have the opportunity to compare French-English dictionaries with my students - and the Harper Collins softcover version is better every time. More accurate, complete with full expressions and all the synonyms you could hope for. Any time that I go to this dictionary, I always come away with the feeling that I got EXACTLY the word or expression I was looking for - and I never got that from any other dictionary I've used! I use it on a daily basis, and it's so well-thumbed that I may need a new one! I heartily recommend it to serious students of French.

Harper Collins Pocket Portuguese Dictionary
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (15 January, 2002)
Author: HarperCollins
Average review score:

O Melhor Diccionario No Mercado!
What do Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Sao Tome e Principe, East Timor, Macao, Guinea-Bissau, Goa, Diu, and parts of New England (U.S.A.) have in common? Well, if you didn't know already, these nations and territories encompass the Portuguese-speaking world, and if you are looking for an excellent, well-researched Portuguese-English dictionary on the market,Harper-Collins' Portuguese-English dictionary is simply the best one out on the market.

Recently revised and redesigned into a handy, pocket-size edition, dictionary offers the best coverage on Portuguese vocabulary, grammar, and structure that other famous foreign-language dictionaries such as Lagenscheidt and Oxford have never been able to grasp. The book, which is in a condensed collegiate edition, is great for its' classification of usage (e.g. it distinguishes words used in Brazil vs. those used in Portugal), and the book's overall design is excellent. Other dictionaries don't take the time and organization in clearly stating where each word is used in the Portuguese-speaking world, and unless you're well known with Lusitanian and Brazilian norms, then not including this classification will make it more difficult when learning or using the language.

If you need the best Portuguese-English dictionary on the market, then you have found it! Somente o melhor dicionario no mercado!

The Harper Handbook to Literature
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1997)
Authors: Northrop Frye, George B. Perkins, and Sheridan Warner Baker
Average review score:

A great resource for any student of literature
Beginners will love The Harper Handbook. My edition is just over 600 pages, chock-full of information. The handbook alphabetically references terms that relate to literature, from terms you know (metaphor) to those you might not (prosopopoeia). The explanations it gives are concise, but very helpful, often with examples. For example, if the book is discussing pastoral dramas, it gives a list of six plays, with publication dates and playwrights. In the back of the book there is a "Chronology of Literature and World Events" that puts a date on many events in the world, Britain, and the US. There's also an index of people mentioned in handbook entries.

These poems are the real thing . . .
Whether you are Native American or not, I would highly recommend this book. These poems reverberate through the blood and the bone. This is my favorite anthology (and I have a pretty hefty personal poetry library). I go nowhere without it! These poems are real . . .
